Installation Production

I had planned to show my video in Southgate park however it kept raining so I had to do it inside. I did it in the radio studio as it is small private. I had only one chair in there and turned the lights off so the person viewing my video would not be distracted by anything else. I wanted only one person at a time so they would not be talking to anyone else and would just concentrate on my video. I had 2 people watch my experimental video that I didn't know so they wouldn't know what it was about or had seen me making as the people in my class are all in my video. they both filled out a questionnaire I had prepared. I also took photos of them as evidence that they viewed my video.

Experimental Video diary

I did my final editing yesterday, I added transitions to make it look smoother and to look more professional. I then removed the sound so it was silent because i had talking in the background and it didn't fit together very well. I also wanted it silent because I wanted to audience to concentrate on the peoples faces not the sound they are making. I also added a title called Good times, Bad times to finish it off.

Evaluation of experimental video

I had to change my idea as I could not film it s it kept raining, but I think it ruined it a bit because it was rushed and not planned very well. I think it will turn out okay but not as good as it would have been if i could do my original idea. I have the people in my class doing the acting but because they are not actors it dose look a bit cheesy and not very well done but i think my concept should come through to the audience. I think that my video is experimental as I have looked at many other experimental videos in class and have realised that an experimental video can be whatever the artist wants it to be. I think my video is personal as its what I think and feel, however other experimental videos can appeal to a broader audience. Mine is like other experimental videos as its what I wanted it to be about and it dose not matter if the audience get it or not. Now that my video is finished I think it looks better than I thought it would. Because I got rid of sound it made it less cheesy and looks more polished. I'm happy with what I have but it would have been better if I had longer shots of each people.
Looking at my questionnaire's i realized that people understood my experimental video, lot of people said that it was about happy times and bad times which is exactly what i was trying to say. It wouldnt have mattered if anyone understand what my concept was but all the people who watched it understood.

Experimental video diary

I started editing on the 12th nov, I just cut up the film so it all fitted to together and I got rid of film I didn't need. I found doing editing easy because I had done it before but I found it wasn't precise enough. I had to put the film in the order I want and am going to add some transitions to make it look better.

Experimental video diary

I filmed my experimental video on the 10th of nov and I had to change it because Iwas meant to film it outside but it kept raining every time I went to film and I didn't have much time left so had to change it so I could do it in time.
I was meant to have a person going up a hill to signify good times in life and happy memories and then them going down a hill to signify the bad times and bad memories. Instead of having the hill i just had close ups of peoples faces being happy and laughing and them the same people being upset and unhappy. This is to show we have good and bad times in life.
I asked everyone in my class if they would do it and many said they would. I had my background as a white wall so you would concentrate on the people. I had a camera on a tripod and just filmed them all in close up of there faces.
I think it went well and should look good when I edit it together.

Exhibition of experimental video

I plan to show my video at Southgate park as that is where i am planning to film my experimental video. I want people who are my age to watch it to see if they get what I'm trying to show and the point I'm trying to making. I will have a video camera with my film on it and ask people if they can watch it and ask them to complete my survey.

chapter 1- to discuss both past and present artists and works

I have watched alot of videos recently and they are all different. Doll Face was animation and had a big concept on how we see people on the TV and want to be them but don't always reach our goal and fail. Its visually very interesting and makes you think and has a big impact. Another video i have watched was Gisele Kerozene that was directed by Jan Kounen. This is very different as it doesn't necessarily have a big concept and it used stop frame animation which is much harder to do that animation and takes a very long time. It was also funny unlike Doll Face which concentrates on a real issue. Koyanisgatsi is a film i watched that had lots of views of landscape and was very beautiful whats different is that it uses no animation and is just filmed with a camera in different places that took them 6 years. It has many contrasts like light/dark and Good/bad and is trying to make to audience think unlike Gisele Kerozene which is being funny and using stop frame animation.

Chameleon

I went to Brighton to the Farica gallery and saw the exhibition Chameleon by Tina Gonsalves. it was very different to things i had seen before and i really enjoyed it as you could change the work. Basically you had a screen with a person on it and they would do the opposite of your emotion so if i smiled the person would cry. The craft was many of these screens hanging from the ceiling and the room was dark so you focused on the screens. and they had sensors next to the screen to see your face and make the person do the opposite of you. I think the concept was moods of people and how it effects others and that everyone feels different at times.

Girl chewing gum

Girl chewing gum by John Smith is in black and white and you instantly think it is an old film. You can hear a man talking who you believe is the director as everything he says happens after. john smith is very clever as he makes the audience believe that there is a director saying all these directions when actually later on you realise that it is john smith talking over an original video. I think the concept of this video is that you shouldn't believe everything you hear and just jump to conclusions because the director tricked you into thinking he was there when he wasn't.

chapter 3 - Narrative and non-narrative structures

From all the videos i have watches recently i have realized they don't all have story lines and some you need watch it all to understand and some you don't. I went to the Tate art gallery and watched Paul McCarthy's video called material gestures. This didn't have a beginning middle or an end as it was expressive and you could walk in and still understand what it was about.
However when i watched the film Doll face it did have a narrative and had a story to it as she changed from the beginning and had a journey and i needed to watch the whole film to understand the meaning. it doesn't necessarily matter if you have a narrative or non- narrative videos as long as the audience relates with it or the film maker gets what he wants in the end.

Chapter 2- the use of technology and techniques and styles

Technology can change the way you see something or the impression it gives someone. You can make something very different using technology. The use of technology is used in doll face as they use animation. I think that it makes it more powerful and gets the point across more as you can see it clearly and easily understand what is going on. You don't necessary need to use technology to get a point across or get the audience to understand what you are saying but it dose make some things more effective like Gisele Kerozene, as it uses stop frame animation. This is really effective as it gives the film a very unique look and makes it different from the rest.
Also koynaasqatsi was made in the 80's and that didn't have lots of new technology and still looks amazing and ahead of time. Before there was lots of technology films were still good and effective but the use of technology adds certain things to a film to make it better or visually better for the audience. In the early days of film making they only had black and white and was very simple however they still made film that made the audience think or to get a point across. But i think when new technology comes around it dose look better than the previous and allows film makers to be more imaginative.

Chaper 6 - Audience Interpretation

when my media group when to the Tate Modern art gallery we saw a film by Paul McCarthy and we all had different reactions and thoughts. Some found it funny and others found it disgusting and unwatchable. This may have been because different people have different views and maybe are used to seeing the things in the film so are not shocked by the content. If you don't like being in dark rooms watching a film with nudity in it might make you uncomfortable. The way you interpret a piece of art depends on many things. Everyone has different experiences in life and this determines how you react to different things.
Paul McCarthy made this film for a reason and intended on his audience to feel a certain way or react in a way that he wanted. However you may watch the film and react in a different way and i dont think that matters as you cant say for sure that everyone will react in the way the artist wanted. As long as a piece of art had a impact on the audience i dont think it matters.

Chapter 5- experimental video

For my experimantal video i want to have two people walking up a hill to signify going up in life and the happy times people go through. I also what to have flashbacks of happy people and them having a good time. This will be in colour and i want it to be sunny. For coming down the hill i want it in black and white and to show the bad times in life and show flashbacks of bad times of things like arguing or falling outs.

A jump from a platform

A jump from a platform is directed by Stephen Talneau and was made in 2007 in London. At first you see water splashing in slow motion in a swimming pool, its also in black and white. Then you see a close up of a boys eye and he is blinking. Then you see young looking people jumping off platforms in a swimming pool which is also in slow motion. Then you hear a older man talking over the people jumping talking about two people being in love. He is saying how they had an adventure together and were a beautiful couple. He then says they broke up as the man was worrying but he really loved each other. A woman then interrupts and says why he was worrying as if she was a interviewer.
I dont think the jumping in the pool and the man talking over are linked as they do not fit together. The way the man was talking was really slow and fitted with the slow motion of the film.

Doll Face

Doll face is about a girl who is in a box and at the beginning she is very bland with a white face and black eyes she looks like a doll. She then sees a TV with an image of a woman and wants to be like her and changes how she looks she then is happy as he smiles. The TV gets further away and the image becomes more unreal and perfect and she comes out of her box to see it and changes again to look like to image on the TV. Then the TV gets further and further away and she cant reach what she wants and she breaks and dies.
The fact that is it a TV she is looking at is trying to show that people these days see stuff on the TV and the media and they want to be like that but you cant always reach it. If you try too hard to be what your not you will fail in some way like doll face did at the end. She is changing what she is as she dose not feel she is good enough as that is what she is being shown and believes.

Gisele Kerozene

Gisele Kerozene was directed by Jan Kounen and is about three crazy looking people who look a bit like witches are trying to steal a bird statue and it turns into a chase. They are flying around on broom sticks and this is achieved by stop frame animation which would have taken a long time. It was filmed in France in 1989 and doesn't really have a concept it is just funny. When you watch it your not sure what is going on as its a bit unusual. They are talking but they are not words they just sound like squeaky muffles. There is a story to it as the witch that wants the bird statue at the beginning goes on a chase and loses his legs and runs someone over and in the end he gets it back. So this means that is it not just a random video and that is hada story to it.

Koyaanisqatsi

This film had many contrasts like it had cave drawings and then a rocket taking off these are very different and from different times, one is old and one is new. There was also destruction as you see old abandoned buildings and a bridge been demolished. The opposite of this is where you see wide shots of new building that are high tech like sky scrapers in New York. It's as if the old building are not wanted anymore and only the new ones are acceptable, and that we are destroying our own planet. You also see wide shots of the Grand Canyon which contrast with the city.
At the beginning of the film you have low tones with men chanting while you see cave drawing of what look like man walking with something that resembles a rocket. Then you see an explosion of fire also with the chanting that sounds tribal. I think that the tribal music makes the fire more powerful as it sounds like it is building up to something and makes it dramatic. You then see a rocket taking off with the chanting as well this makes you feel uneasy as it does not fit. The music that is used is classical, but it builds up at points like when you see the people in the station all packet in being speed up this is showing that they are all busy. At the end of the film when the rocket goes off you have slow peaceful music this makes you feel uneasy as the visual you are seeing dose not fit with the music this is also opposites. you have the music opposite to the visual and the contrast between different place in the world.
i think the film is trying to show before humans got to earth the world was much more simple with beautiful places like the Grand Canyon. People destroy the earth and get rid of the old and replace it with the new and harm the earth in the process. Koyaanisgatsi also concentrates on opposites like: old/new, Fast/slow, dark/light.

Chapter 4 - How does the exhibition space change the meaning of the work.

When you are in an exhibition it is very different to looking at art at home. First of all the environment is different in an exhibition as you are in a quiet place concentrating on the work and having all your thoughts to yourself. Having work in a gallery automatically means you are going to look at art as this is what gallery's are designed for but it also depends if the people think it is art or not. Exhibitions have white walls and this means when you look at the work you have all your attention on the work but if you were somewhere else you could be distracted. If you were at home and had a piece of art on your wall. You would have picked it out and it would mean something to you as you liked it enough to put it up in your house so the meaning of the work would be personal to them, than any piece of work in an exhibition.
When I went to the Tate modern I saw Paul McCarthy's "Material gestures". When I was walking in I was not sure what was inside and was shocked as it was nude videos. The room was dark with 4 or 5 projectors on tables in the middle. The room was dark so it felt like I was in a cinema and had to be quite. Other people around me were really interested and some were writing notes on the piece. The atmosphere made me feel uncomfortable and like I was in a dingy space. There was 4 or 5 videos on the wall that overlapped so you were overwhelmed with the content of the videos. The artist deliberately made it so people would feel disturbed as the content of his videos is shocking and the room it’s in adds to how the artist wants you feel.
If the video was in a different environment i think it would still be shocking but would not make you feel so uncomfortable as the dark lighting made you feel like you were somewhere dirty. Also the content of the videos was in darkly lit places with browns and reds so being in a room where the atmosphere was very seedy and darkly lit.
